Earthquake Monitoring
0It’s amazing. Here’s a list of earthquakes 5+ in magnitude, over the past 7 days. Here’s the USGS site where you’ll find the information on this morning’s huge quake off Japan and all the strong aftershocks they’ve received. What a list. Refresh the page for up to the minute earthquake reports of 5+. To convert for Chicago time, subtract 6 hours from the Universal Time indicated. After we change the clocks on Sunday, subtract 5 hours.
Smart Credit Cards
0The credit card of the future may be your cell phone, using Near Field Communications to transfer information with a merchant. But smart credit cards are coming on strong and here’s a look at how one works. You can also listen to me talk with WGN Radio’s Mike McConnell about smart credit cards and turning your cell phone into an electronic wallet.
iPad 2 – The Movie
0Here’s a nice Apple-produced video about the new iPad 2, from engadget.com. Available March 11, 2011 starting at $499.
iPad 2 and Steve Jobs!
0Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day was that Steve Jobs, on medical leave from Apple, did the presentation of the iPad 2 and got a standing ovation when he walked on stage. The iPad 2 looks a lot like the original iPad but it’s one third thinner, comes in white or black, and has shed a couple of ounces. Cameras, front and back, allow you to shoot photos and video as well as video-conference…like an iPhone 4. This is also a world-wide iPad, because it works with both GSM and CDMA cellular systems, AT&T and Verizon. The iPad two features a new, faster, dual-core processor and a 9x faster graphics processor. In nine months, Apple sold 15 million iPads. Even with new competition in the tablet category it’s believed they can sell over 30 million iPads in 2011. The iPad 2 will be available March 11. iPad 2 prices will still start at $500. The Apple iPad is a runaway hit, with 15 million sold in the last 9 months of 2010. It’s believe they can sell more than 30 million of them in 2011, despite the increased competition in the tablet arena from players like Motorola, Blackberry, and Samsung. The iPad currently has about a 90 percent market share when it comes to tablets.
Your Verizon iPhone Has Arrived
2Verizon COO Lowell McAdam announces an iPhone, arriving in early February. It has all the features of the AT&T iPhone but, of course, it’s CDMA. The phone will also offer the ability to create a personal hot spot for up to 5 devices. It will run on the 3G network, not Verizon’s 4G LTE which was hyped so heavily at the Consumer Electronics Show. Verizon customers can pre-order the phone stating February 3. A week later, it’ll be available to everyone else and at Verizon stores. Your Verizon iPhone4 will be priced at $199 for 16GB and $299 for a 32GB model. A comment was made that, after rigorous testing, they feel confident about the phones performance (for those worried about a pesky antenna problem). A lot of people have been waiting for a Verizon iPhone since their network is considered by many to be better than AT&T, but there’s always been disagreement between the two carriers about coverage. A recent comment from AT&T claimed that their GSM network is faster than CDMA and that Verizon iPhone users should get ready for “life in the slow lane.” But Verizon says they’ve beefed up their network in anticipation of their iPhone launch. The downside of CDMA comes when traveling overseas, and the fact that a CDMA phone can’t do voice and data at the same time. A solution for that is said to be in the works, although they really didn’t talk about it during the press conference. The most important thing is, the iPhone really IS coming to Verizon!

Smart TV
0At the Consumer Electronics Show, I never miss the LG press conference. That’s a big deal, since it’s at the early Vegas hour of 8am. Getting up a little after 6am, after a too-late-the-night-before, is worth it because LG never disappoints. This year, it was about smart products. Smart TVs, smart stuff that goes with TVs, smart appliances, you get the idea. Connected TVs are all over CES but LG was among the first to offer this Internet connectivity. Now, they’ve figured out a better way to navigate it with your remote as well. Here’s more about Smart TV from LG’s JohnTaylor.

Car EN-V?
0I got to experience the amazIng General Motors EN-V this weekend, making its North American debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Part car, part Segway, part amusement park ride, and 100% futuristic. The EN-V stands for electric networked vehicle. It’s a concept that demonstrates what cars can be, and maybe what cars should be, especially in crowded urban environments. These carbon fiber vehicles had been produced all over the world. Using a platform built by Segway, the EN-V vehicles were built in Australia, Germany, and California. GM doesn’t talk price, but my sources tell me that each of these exclusive little prototypes comes in at around 4 to 5 million dollars. Smaller than a Smart car, they have a top speed of 25 miles per hour and they have a range of 25 miles, and that’s adequate for the urban commuter. But they have amazing abilities beyond that. They have the ability to platoon down the road, with one following the EN-V in front of it. They have the ability to stop for an obstacle, like a pedestrian. Yep, it’s the hands-free driving of the future, the ultimate smart commuting vehicle. The EN-V even has the ability to come when called. Really, walk out of a restaurant and call the EN-V on your smart phone. It wakes up and comes to you. Due to the Segway powertrain, the EN-V balances and has incredible turn-on-a-dime capabilities. Like the Segway, that zero-degree turning radius lets you turn your car into very tight spaces. Like the Segway, the EN-V has no suspension. I still feel it in my kidneys. It was point out that a person who only knew the Model A would still recognize the car of today. They have not changed that much…and they really need to. Now, I know many of you say you’ll never trade in your Malibu for a GM EN-V. Then again, with a target date of 2030, you have some time to think about it.

We welcome your comments, will people ever embrace cars this small…even in crowded urban areas?
A Ball+A Smartphone=Sphero
0I watched these lit up balls rolling around the floor. Ironically, we were in the BALLroom of a hotel during CES. It’s Sphero. Bluetooth controlled by your smartphone. Play games, have a ball, when the battery runs low it’ll go park itself on its charging station. This is a little like a land version of Parrot’s AR.Drone, which was introduced last year and had a huge tent in the parking lot of this year’s CES. Both products involve games with a physical object being played on a smartphone’s screen. The augmented reality Sphero will be about $100, end of the year, here’s the official Sphero video. Should be good, once they get rolling.
We welcome your comments, dumb or fun?
Motorola Xoom
0We got an early hands-on with the Motorola Xoom, introduced at CES. I was really impressed with the form, the feel of it, the speed, the front and rear cameras, the ability to do flash. Can it be a real alternative to the iPad…you betcha. We welcome your comments, will we see an iPad killer in 2011? I didn’t shoot much video at CES, so enjoy this video (shot in the same ballroom I was in) by the fine folks at PC Magazine.
CES Attendance Up
0More than 140,000 people attended the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show. That’s an increase from a year ago, and a big increase over 2009 when the number fell to less than 115,000. The preliminary 140,000 figure puts it in line with the 2008 show. CES also set a record, with 30 thousand attendees coming from overseas. People were really talking about the annual event. Since last Monday there were 158,000 tweets about CES. So, CES was back in a big way. You could see it in the number of people around you, you could see it in the number of innovative products, and you could feel the positive vibe on the floor of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
